Neumorphism — Design Dossier
Soft UI characterized by dual directional shadows (one light source, one dark shadow) that create the illusion of controls being pressed into or extruded from the substrate itself.
Design Theory
Coined in late 2019 by Jason Kelley. Treats UI elements not as floating sheets of glass or flat cards, but as physical forms vacuum-formed directly out of the same plastic or rubber substrate.

- Difficult to scale across complex content-heavy websites
Specs & Research
WCAG Accessibility:
Low to Moderate: Edge distinction relies heavily on subtle shadow tints. Inner state indicators (active colored pips, high-contrast text) are mandatory to meet WCAG AA standards.
Performance Impact:
Moderate: Multiple dual box-shadow declarations per element (`9px 9px 16px, -9px -9px 16px`).
